Group Seeks Help With Christmas Gifts For Foster Kids

Troup Foster Parents Association is looking for donations of new toys and money to provide gifts and gift certificates for Troup County children in foster care.

The Georgia Department of Family and Children Services provides foster parents with one small gift for each foster child younger than 14, while older foster children receive no gifts from state funds.

The Troup Foster Parents Association would like to be able to provide gifts for the 200 Troup County children in foster care. Their goal is to provide two gifts for each child under the age of 14 and a $ 50 Wal-Mart gift certificate for each teenager.

Younger children will receive their gifts at a Christmas party on December 2. The gifts for teenagers in group homes will be given to DFCS case workers for delivery.

Operation Christmas Child (www.samaritanspurse.org) is looking for shoe boxes filled with small gifts for children in more than 100 countries. Lafayette Christian
School at 2382 Westpoint Road, LaGrange, GA 30240, is the regional collection spot for this area and will be collecting the boxes from November 13th through the 17th.

LaGrange / Troup County Humane Society needs donated Christmas wrapping paper and gift boxes of all size. The organization is holding a gift-wrapping fundraiser throughout the holiday season.

Donated items may be dropped off weekdays from 1:00 pm until 5:00 pm at the Holland M. Ware Animal Shelter on Orchard Hill Road in LaGrange, GA. Make A Difference, donate some wrapping and / or boxes to help the animals at the society.

High school aged volunteers are needed to tutor elementary school aged students for a minimum of 30 minutes a week. Communities in School volunteers work in eleven Troup County elementary schools and volunteers can choose the school where they would like to volunteer.

Volunteers work any time between 8:00 am and 5:30 pm. A one-hour training is required for all volunteers. For information, call Communities in Schools at (706) 298-7164.
